useful life of a helmet

I've been going around and around on this the past week after re-reading a MCN article where the writer related that neither the helmet manufacturers or Snell would provide any data regarding the...

tents

I started out with a Zoid 2 man but now use a Mountain Hard Gear 3 man just for the space. Easier to get changed in and somewhere for my duffel. A tent that is self supporting (doesn't need stakes...

Question Bag to go across the rear seat & panniers of a R1200GS

I was thinking of getting something like the Helen 2 Wheels bag to go across the luggage so I don't have to stuff the tent every morning. A dry bag that would go across the whole back of the bike...

Planning on making the trip around the east end of the lake and then closing the loop after the weekend in Trenton. Anybody have a good way to avoid Toronto traffic? Anybody else going to be a...

OK, I've got the alloy wheels

and I use the S2000 (which is a waste of money because you can get the same thing from Home Depot by the gallon for less) all the time with no ill effect on the wheels. You can't use it on the...

I've never seen anything that bad

IMHO, even a strong detergent wouldn't do something like that. I've got experience with metal finishing from bright dip to electropolishing and that kind of damage looks like years of salt. That...

I have no idea why mine keeps going

39,000 miles and no problems. I've only been changing the FD oil at 12k intervals. I've heard that the early GSs were assembled more as prototypes than on the line and I might have one of those...

the cross drilled disks hold dust and dirt

My GS does this squealing coming to a stop all the time except right after a bath and cleaning the disks with a brush and then cleaning with brake cleaner. That lasts for all of 10 miles. The pads...

I usually let it run while I put my gloves on

But that's about it. I've noticed that when I shut down the throttle at the end of the parking lot the engine will stammer a bit, which can get a little goofy. About 30 seconds to get the gloves on...

I've got the BestRest Light bar

with a couple of big IPF dual beams on each side. The bar works well. You do want to get the aux lights as far forward as possible though. If you don't the wind screen flares with pick up spilled...

at the limits I'd ride on the street either bike handles well

If you're going to try to go fast in the Alps you might well become a statistic. I'd get the GS so you can see over all the funny little cars. Plus, to echo what was already said, when the road...

Grey goes with everything....

I'm told the black cases get no hotter than the silver ones. Beyond that it's all asthetics and what you like. There's always power coat in white, too. I think the Jesse's a powder coated unless...

just put Anakee 2s on the bike

switched over from Tourances. It took about 200 miles before the Anakees broke in but they are going well now. They do have the stiffer sidewall so you pick up more road bumps in the bars. ...

aircraft cable locks, dogs, & guns?

Stainless steel aircraft cable locks are more difficult to cut without the right tools. Dogs are good. Anything to make life difficult for the crooks.

Be careful posting notes about using guns...

I'm running a patched front tire right now

If you mounted some Conti TKCs and put studs in the knobs that is probably the best way to go. But anything that's good on ice isn't so good on dry roads. I think Aerostitch offers a studding kit...

you need at least 3000 RPM to keep the engine happy

well, that's on my 2005 GS but there's not that much difference in the engine. I know mine doesn't like to pull below 3000 RPM with just me on the bike.

I would go with an extended warranty with...

Touratech offers something that adds 16 liters to the tank capacity..

I don't know about the retrofit you're talking about but Touratech offers a "bolt on" kit that puts two 8 liter "side tanks" alongside of the existing R1200GS tank.

odd, my 2005 specifies 89 octane

By the US methods my bike says 89 octane. I've been running mostly that for the 7 years. I do switch to 93 if I fill up at BJs or if I'm fully loaded up. But otherwise it's been 89 all the time.

The idea of taking a...
