Yes, I use 17/30 on my '79. What I was referring to was 18" cast wheel swaps. For instance, I believe the smallest rear sprocket that will fit an SR500 wheel is a 40 tooth.

Something else to check about regarding an 18" cast wheel swap would be to see if you can get the size sprocket you want for the wheel, since the XS650 uses a smaller rear sprocket than most bikes.
