I looked at a couple quads I'm familiar with, these are more accurate than most maps I've tried (MVUM, national geographics maps, etc). Plus they show private versus national forest boundaries.

Just turned 30K miles on my 2012 and first failure

both head lamps AND the headlight fuse are blown - all at once. Will replace all tonight and hope its a fluke. One burned out bulb looks funny inside and it may be creating a constant short.

Newer KOA near Peaks of Otter

I've found KOA's reliably good for tent camping or Camping Cabins. This one is in a great spot near miles and miles of dirt forest roads. Just a thought.....

Have you done a compression check?

Unless it has known issues, I wouldn't assume it needs a rebuild with those miles. Those slant fours are pretty solid motors - I drove a couple to those miles and they were still running strong.

I've got some raising links from an 03 VStrom 1000

Not sure if they'd fit your bike, but I believe they raised the rear of my '03 DL1000 about an inch. Raising the rear may give you a little quicker turn in too, but should give you a little more...

460 to Route 40 (pick up in Waverly, creates a loop south of Petersburg and back to 460 at Blackstone), then lots of backroads over toward GWNF in Amherst...
