When my engine was dusted and wouldn't start, it was wear on the valves that caused a loss of compression. All happened very quickly and with no apparent performance loss.

A bit of hot glue will do the trick. Put WD 40 on the self tapper, screw it in and wait until the glue completely sets. Then remove the screw and test the seating or leave in for a nice tight fit.

Checked my 2014 airbox and unifilter after 7000 kms of often very dusty riding. It was spotless. Intake socks appear to take much of the dust, with much less dirt on the pre-filter than expected.
