I remember hearing once about a couple of guys just lifting a wheel-locked bike up onto a couple of skate boards and rolling it off. Maybe an urban myth, but i wouldn't put it past them, seems easy...

I think he means that black arch looking thing hanging between the sprocket and the nut. It might be that the rubber dampener of the stock sprocket sheared off?
