Don't know how many miles the GS you rode had on it but my '05 1200 started out like that too, but got better, and better, and better. It didn't really feel completely broken until 15 to 20K...

There will be varying opinions on seats for sure. My bike had the triumph gel rider's seat on it when I bought it. To me it was more "U" shaped feeling locking me in one position (I'm a big guy tho)....
