I have had lots of Japanese bikes that I thought were very smooth shifters but none as smooth as my 1981 Honda XL500S. Up or down, with or without the clutch the lever just snicks through the gears....

Oh I forgot to add also to my previous post that the 500 Shadow seems to get 60mpg nearly all the time. It helps that in 6th gear the small engine turns only 4400 rpm.
