At least whine from gear-driven cams makes some technical sense. I don't know why Triumph chose a noisy straight cut primary gear for a wonderful modern engine, other than for marketing reasons.

Those are really good questions, especially when you add long distance rides to the requirements. I'm not at all tempted by the NC700, but the CB500X versus DL650 (and Versys) is tough.
