Crack the nut on the front axle, push bike over onto side-stand, insert 2x2.
In my case, I have a screw sticking out of one end/side of the 2x2 that aligns with a hole at the front of my skidplate....

The stock spark plug socket on the KLR 650 is an 18 mm 6 point. And you're right it needs to be a thin wall. (a thin wall 3/4 " will do in a pinch.)
I recommend that you get a proper thin wall 18mm...

You have to keep it to 90/95 KPH to get it to 500 on a relatively stock KLR.
Headwinds and/or heavy throttles will totally blow that away.
