When I'm on a trail I always use the sidestand and the weight of the bike to push down the tire from the rim. Usually my weight isn't enough to do it.

I'm not sure but I think it has an emergency function. If there is an oil pump falilure and/or the oil tank is overfilled the redundant oil can flow back to the engine. Maybe... :hmmmmm
