1976 XL250 (AKA my father-in-law's baby)
1981 XL185S (AKA...

Great stories, all.

My son already wants to get the bike fixed. We'll be back on the trail in no time.

My wife told me that my son only kept a stiff upper-lip when I was around. She said he was pretty upset when I...

Shortest trip ever... with my 11-year-old

I have a rather timid 11-year-old son. He's brilliant (test score prove it! :deal), but he's not overly athletic. He is curious and a hard worker though.

So, when I discovered a disused 1980 XR80...

Headlight replacement options 1981 XL185S

After a week of daily riding to/from work (20 miles per day), my sealed beam headlight blew out. I understand this is fairly common with the old XLs with the headlight circuit coming off the stator....

XL185s valve clearance

Aside: Spirit1dog: Sick (as in awesome) color!

First, my 1981 XL185s is registered and ready for street riding. I almost took her on Skyline Drive (Wasatch Plateau, Utah) today, but my buddy fell...

Well, putt-putt passed her safety inspection. I went to the DMV and discovered that the seller didn't sign the title. Oops. No problem, he's a good friend and I'll get that fixed tonight.

She lives!

I *finally* got the putt-putt's headlight case rewired. Thanks to tokyoklahoma for pointing out that the wiring diagram would be in the back of my Haynes manual (I had looked in the electrical...

Wiring help

Does anyone know if I can download a wiring diagram for a 1981 XL185s? I have the Haynes manual, but it has nothing like that in it.

I just repaired the cracked headlight casing. When I took the...

Looks like my family.

Nice. My BILs and FIL and I are planning a one-night back country ride on our old XLs: 1978 XL250, 1981 XL185s, 1982 XL250, and 1983 XL350. I'll post pics when it happens.

SOLVED: Why my xl185s died when I gave her throttle.

I sat down with my brother-in-law to work on our 1980s XLs. (He's got a 250 that needed the kill switch replaced.) I pulled the carb on mine so I could install my "fixed" air tube, and when we were...

Correction: The cutting boards were $2.00, not $20.

That's a pretty big typo, but the cutting boards were *not* $20.

A few cosmetic patches for my XL185s

While I wait for the Haynes manual to arrive, I turned my attention to less mechanical issues. I had epoxied the headlight case back together, but there was a large chunk missing off the front....

Thanks.

I just ordered the Haynes manual. Once that comes in, I'll go over the valves and the chain tensioner. Thanks for your help. I really want to get this bike road worthy by spring.

xl185s dies on throttle

I'm stumped on this one. A few days ago, I rode about 5 miles on the bike without a problem. Today I went to start it up and it started (with choke), but died with a little puff when I twisted the...

Going over my putt-putt, I found that the tube between the air cleaner box and the carb had a little tear in it.
