I agree that it is a current-output Hall sensor. I wish it was a 3 wire, but we get what we get. At least it fits the transmission nicely.

Speedhut's manual says pulses from 1V-100V will work,...

The Speedhut is a little sluggish below ~10MPH. Hard to say if it's the meter or the sensor. Signal looked ok on the scope but it's not as clean as I'd like. I think a trigger would improve it.

Nice writeup, Henry. And since you mention it, I think a Schmitt trigger would be an excellent idea for this sensor if somebody wanted to go to the trouble....

You are on the right track. Maybe a simpler way to explain it is the resistor turns the circuit off. Without it we just hang out at battery voltage on the output and never see a pulse.
