I am guessing you both filled up at the same station? Probably with premium at a place that doesn't sell it very often and was getting old? You both probably got a little water when you filled up...

Throw some oil down the speedometer cable and see if that gets rid of the noise. Had a funny noise on a guzzi once and that took care of it. Although the speedometer still showed a "range" of speed...

Hmm... White fine powder. Could it be Aluminum corrosion? Petcock maybe? I've had a float bowl corrode before. Steel wool helped to clean it up.

I've seen this happen on KTM's If these hints don't work, lower your brake pedal! You might be riding your rear brake. Did the disc look like it got hot?
