Yes it looks like Southern Illinois in the winter. Those roads may still have ruts I put in them with my Honda 305 scrambler in the late 60s while going to SIU.

You definitely don't want to damage the counter shaft bearing due to inadequate chain slack. I am not familiar with the KTM, but on many bikes you need to split the case to replace the bearing.
