Just get out and shoot! Lots of good info out there. Get a decent tripod and remote shutter release before you do anything else... Learn the exposure triangle and how to manipulate it for...

Thanks guys. Star shots are a max of 30 seconds or you get star "trails". This was right at 30 seconds. I light painted the foreground with two flashlights.
