You risk having an oil leak should you leave that old gasket residue on. Isopropyl alcohol will soften it up and then find yourself a sharp sturdy plastic scraper (no metal) and some elbow grease....

The UK is harsh on bikes from what I've seen. My German AT with 85 K kms has very little sign of corrosion...calipers...
