The 16T will wear the chain quicker regardless of the size of the rear sprocket. Not because of the shorter chain, but because of the tighter radius of the gear. Fewer teeth kill chains faster...

The 990 likes to be shifted more aggressively than other bikes. I've been hitting the fake neutral more often after getting new stiffer moto boots. Harder to feel the shifter and I'm pansy shifting....
