Great ride report, these same areas are on my route this June.
I like the Land Cruiser also, jealous we don't get the Turbo Diesels here in the US. I'll be doing this trip in my Toyota FJ Cruiser.

Using the topo map it just lays out a route in straight lines.
If you lay out the route in City Navigator it will follow the trails, streets etc.
When you select maps around route, select them both...

Tool Storage tube
