I have the same Garmin 276c.
I think the problem is caused by losing signal for a bit then re-aquiring signal down the road a ways. The gps forgets the gap in time and thinks you covered the distance at rocket speed.

I wish they would fix that. Maybe they have, I better go see if there is a firmware update.

That may be one big plus that the newer models which have the sirf-III chip which does not lose signal so easy in the woods.
