Colebatch, you have mentioned that you've been using soft luggage for a long time. I recently parted out the aluminum boxes and steel racks off my Dakar to some friends and am planning on making a lighter rack that will carry soft bags. How have previous bags mounted compared to the Ortlieb's? What diameter and wall thickness was the steel tubing that you used for the rack? Just curious as you said it all was a little weak for the abuse it took.

This is a really great thread. You've done a lot of interesting things with the bike. Honestly, the clip board is one of my favorite mods.
