I talked to the previous owner last night, looks like the same thing happened to him, and believe it or not, it was in Death Valley. He rode the thing all the way back to the Reno area. He said it's an easy fix, just have to pull the final drive and replace the roller bearings. He used blue locktite last time, Im putting red on.
If you're coming to Death Valley the washboard is pretty bad right now.
LOCKTITE EVERYTHING BEFORE YOU COME!
Other than that, it was a great 2 days of riding.
Now that can ruin a weekend.
I have heard there have been drive shaft problems with some of the BMW's but I don't know which year or model. Hopefully it is a quick fix. There is probably alot of info on this in the "G Spot" forum of this site.
Some of the worst washboard I have ridden on in DV was from Ubehebe Crater to Crankshaft Junction. My GSA shook and rattled but everything held together
