I think the point is that all the safety gear in the world won't prevent accidents, and there is some evidence that wearing gear may make you more prone to getting into accidents. The gear will help you survive the accident. Ride with the attitude that your every action is important and is your main defense against an accident, but don't think your gear will save you from your mistakes.
