So, is she going to be using a hand held or a radio mounted in the truck? A radio in the truck sends and receives better, but then she has to stay in the truck or leave the door open and stay close by. Hand held radios have very limited range as compared to the truck mount, if the little Icom gets out 2 miles you are doing good, which would give you maybe 2 or 3 minuets on either side of the pit to talk. Not much for a total cost of around $800 to $1000.
