Who knows. Hicks XR was jetted for SLC and higher elevations, might have been running lean and hot (cue Pluric). When I bought it, I checked the valves, but never had the engine apart. It's entirely possibly that they were sinking into the head. Although when I owned the bike, I only adjusted them once, when I first brought it home, then they stayed in spec.
