Agreed - I meant 'BMW' engine. It IS the smoothest.
Also agree, didn't make it clear they suck out the mid-range power on an 80. 40mm are gold to folks with R100's that are doing performance changes. They have the room to make more muscle. I had a 77 R100S in Seattle that had hi-comp heads, 40mm carbs and exhaust, lightened fly wheel and other farkles that gave it pretty good push for an old, heavy bike.
