This area was and is pretty isolated from the agricultural and trade centers of Crete. This made it a perfect place for Hermits to come and live in the many caves of the Martsalo and Agiofarago canyons. In fact the name Agiofarago translated means Holy Canyon. Tenths of Hermits came here starting as early as 1100 AD followed by many who sought spiritual advice and counsel. One of their creations of that time is the monastery of Odigitrias we passed a few hours earlier. Both Canyons have many natural or human made caves where the hermits lived and if you search a bit you can find a few tracks of their household.
(You can expect a more detailed report about this area in another ride report dedicated entirely to this area)
Orange-> Our route
Red-> Martsalo Canyon
Yellow-> Agiofarago Canyon
Roads leads to the start of both Canyons but none passes through those. Nice place to hike though
A bit farther to the east many ships anchored are visible. That area is called Kaloi Limenes (Καλοί Λιμένες, translation: Good Harbors) and has a small island that's being used as a petrol station for ships. The winds blows usually from the north and the mountains protect any ships that seek shelter from the elements of nature.
