2 race reports

Well both Haley and I have been up against a learning curve the last 2 races. Her with a new bike and me running in the "B" class has led to some tough races.

Haley is getting used to the new bike which has more power but also more weight. I dropped 2 teeth in the rear from a 48 tooth to a 46 to make 2nd gear more usable, Set of Carmichael bend bars at the regular width (old bars were cut down to 28.5"), and rejetted it per KTM talk specs...so her bike is good.
The problem was I didn't do any of this prior to her first race, and that combined with some debris still floating in the tank even after cleaning it caused her some carb issues. The bike was puking fuel out the carb vent on the starting line and refusing to idle well but off she went to soldier on through one lap before succumbing to a loose gas cap that popped off during a spill and covered her hands in gas....not a good day.

great start though!

Her race last weekend went much better with no bike issues and just one hard knock to the head when she hit the ground. She was happy to beat 4 boys and knows she left a lot of time on the track!

and now on to my report. The last 2 tracks we have raced on have been near Lake Okeechobee..another words flat and sandy. My first race started out well with being in the top 4 at the first turn and slowly I started giving up positions. Guys in this class seem to race harder and faster for several miles before they settle down. I come through to finish the first lap in 11th and that's where I stayed the whole race. i did have some good battles in the last lap with 2 guys in my class who passed me and I managed to get them back by by the end. I had fun, but the hardest part was settling down during the first lap. I know pasting the letter"B" on my side plate wasn't going to make me any faster, it's just the reality that the winner was 11 minutes !!! ahead of me...sigh.5 minutes gets me closer to 5th so that will be a good goal !

Last weekends race brought hope things would get better. Sundays mileage was 12.5 so 3 laps meant almost 2 full hrs of racing. Good friend of mine Ryan Turner who got promoted into "B" last year from "C" says to me "Troy,
let me give you a little advice. Don't pull over for anybody. You're get good starts and you deserve to be in this class, so don't wave anybody by, make them work for it!" Really gave me a lot to think about concerning my confidence as I'm 3rd off the line and manage to slide into first right before we dump into woods!!!

Me looking to scoot inside and take the lead.

crap...I'm in the lead...now what do I do I ride with a death grip on the bars, heart a pumping, and the little voice in my head telling me to relax, but I know they're coming.....fast.
2nd place is behind me yelling " Come man we gotta go" and I mutter "I'm going as fast as I can!" as we dump into another open section 2 miles in and he passes me with a verbal "whoooo" and a roost of sand. slowly i give up positions as my arm pump is so bad i can't feel my hands. For the next 30 miles I wondering why I'm even out there. I'm riding horribly as I almost call it a day after 2 laps. I take a long hard look at the parking lot as the course winds back near on the 3rd lap..I'll just say I was having a bad race and quit right here...no one will give me a hard time..but I can't do it.You see a good friend of mine, Mark Z.(196B) , is back behind me some where. He just got promoted from C a few races before me, so I know we are pretty equal in speed. Mark is the one person I have to beat every race...period. He's my benchmark, the one guy that lets me salvage something from a 11th place finish..he's competitive and hates to lose as much as I do..if i quit he wins...can't let that happen.
About 5 miles from the finish (3rd lap) I hear a bike coming up so I give them some room to pass..I hear "Thanks Troy" as i realize it's Mark Z...oh hell no !!! At this point I'm bound and determined to not let him get away. We're using 2 contrasting styles as he's standing up through the rough stiff and I'm forced to sit as I can't feel my hands/arms and i only stand when i absolutely have to. The pace is now much faster as he's trying to lose me and I'm simply not going to let that happen. I'm re-passing guys from other classes who have to be wondering what the hell got into me.. At one point Mark gets wedged against a tree and I try to go around and get stuck right next to him. I'm laughing out loud at both of us knuckleheads as i let him take off first..I just want to keep the pressure on him.

A mile left to go..the plan is to wait until the last set of double greens/right hand corner and drag race him to the finish. I cut it up inside as he swings wide and it's a loooong drag race to the finish. 2nd...3rd...4th....5th...god the bike is jetted good as it screams on the pipe...I'm catching him. My butt is way back on the seat and I'm tucked down behind the bars as I pass him going as fast as the bike will carry me..we're coming up on the "Stop racing" sign that signals it's time to start braking and make a 90 degree left into the chicane. I'd been running the bike in deep on prior laps to see when to brake so I grabbed a handful of front brake and started scrubbing off speed. I was just about stopped when i hear a yell of "watch out" to my left and mark goes flying past me waaaaay out of shape! The crowd scattered as he blows through the yellow tape and ends up 15 yds past the scoring chicane Seemed he had overestimated the braking power of that one little disc up front. (he used to road race, including the Daytona 200) ..I got him !!! He was very apologetic to myself and the scoring ref for his mistake as i thought what a great race it ended up being...whew. Will be hitting the gym for next months race..hope being in better shape will help, I need it!
