This is something that's almost impossible to explain to someone who's never ridden offroad. On the plus side, riding = conditioning, so the more you do it, the better you are at it.
Now, throw in a winter of fighting off sinus infections and exercise-induced asthma, and you've got my situation. I'm doing better than last year at least!
