Yep, the air isn't so much going through the screen, rather up the back side of it. That's why it's not just a round hole. More of an air intake-like design following along with the airflow.

I had a screen like that and one day while I was cleaning the bugs off I could not figure out why they would not come off. That's when I realized the bugs were on the other side of the screen
