I had the same problem, I pulled the screen off and got beat up even more, then I saw someone with one of these wind screens
http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/F800GSprod.html and rode it, he was a bit shorter than me so I got some helm buffeting but it was a dramatic improvement. I have one on my bike and love it. I do a lot of dirt riding and it does not bother me in the least either. It is fairly vertical so I am not to worried about whacking myself on it. It is some money but is not floppy and has held up to a pretty big bird strike.
