One quick post, regarding the horses. As Mastermarine said, you could tell they were near by the big piles of poop. Once sighted, however, they are extremely difficult to photograph -- they are skittish and run like hell when they see you.
Early that morning, we saw one in the open desert. Mastermarine stopped, but I was absolutely determined to get a picture of this one. I turned on my best desert racing stance and blasted past down a very rough two track route, then cut off into the desert chasing the horse. I was able to get within about 40 feet of him, but then had to lock up the bike, come to a stop, rip up my flip-up helmet, grab my camera out of the tank bag and begin shooting. In the five to ten seconds it took to go from full bore race to focused photographer, the horse was almost gone!
