The final straw

As the morning wore on, Terry and I found ourselves waiting more and more often for Rick to catch up. The falls and the pain in his hip were clearly affecting his riding speed:

This section was probably this final straw. A deeply rutted stretch in which Rick went down again, hurting his already sore hip dramatically more:'

It was no more than half an hour on easier trails from there into the city of Lviv and our lunch break, But Rick was deep in thought. By Lviv he told us that he had come to a decision. He needed to rest and protect his hip. On top of that his bike wasn't running well and the steering and suspension were not right. He was going to say goodbye to us in Lviv and return to Western Europe, sort his bike out, and sort out his hip.

We said our farewells to Rick:

It was only lunchtime on Day 1 (of about 100 days) of offroad: - we had done just 50 miles of a scheduled 12,000. We had lost Rick already - a seasoned veteran of the TAT and Continental Divide Trails. This trip was already taking casualties.
