I need to upgrade my front rim and ordering the rims and lacing them up myself using the stock spokes would cut costs by over 50% but I do not want to regret it.

I did my own using the stock spokes. 6 years now and the rim has no damage.
(I used Buchanan's 1.85 sun rim)
Its not the spokes, or the way they're laced that is the weak link. It's a soft rim. Replace that and your good to go for many years.
