The Ohio River.
The Muskingum River.
And The Little Muskingum River.
The Little Muskingum River flows southwest toward Marietta out of the hill country of Monroe County. It takes a twisted, meandering, 65 mile journey on it's way to the Ohio River.
It has no memory. It has no regrets. It has no remorse, no sense of right and no sense of wrong. It flows and that is all.
On July the 17th, 1979 Jonathan Matthew Burkhart lost his life to the Little Muskingum River. He was the youngest of the four Burkhart boys that shared a single bedroom in a tiny house in a small neighborhood that was tucked into a corner where Killwell Run emptied into Duck Creek.
It was his fifteenth birthday.
These waters that surround me now in life surrounded Jonathan then.
It's been over 33 years, I think about him often. Time has a way of healing and the wounds are not so painful all these years later but the memory abides. Time has a way of washing memories away but some memories are not to be denied.
They encompass me..............just as..........these waters that surround me.
