sealed tubes work good, so long as rods were dry to begin with.

tombstone welders are Lincoln Idealarc rated at 250amp DC, 300amp AC. look at your label, it's probably rated for 225 amp AC and 150amp DC.

you will get your best results on steel with DC setting. rod ovens veri in size. mine holds about 15 lbs. some will use a light bulb inside an ice chest or old frig to store rods.
