You can still do every bit of service on a modern hexhead. You're going to need to buy a couple tools, though, notably a micrometer and a couple little gadgets to do the brake bleed.
In my house, I have a /2, an R100CS and a hexhead. If you can work on one and can think, you can work on any of them.
