I have trailered many a motorcycle, mower, boat and other stuff with painted finishes and never incurred any paint damage. Common sense dictates proper securing of any cover. Even reasonably priced covers are made with soft inner liners to prevent marring paint. I have had a magnetic tank bag attached to my GS for 10 years and no scratches. The tank bag is a cheap $30 product that is now rotted and ready for replacement.

Covers prevent stone chips and prying eyes especially if you overnight in a ghetto or campground.
