I bought a 2011 KLR and 5 months later bought a 2012 990 Adv. For the same reasons you mentioned. I too was looking at the 800 GS. I went KTM because it rode better, had way better balance and way more power. I even went into the test rides already having made up my mind I was getting the BMW. My suggestion is to ride both(a fair distance) and make sure you do it back to back so everything is fresh in your mind. Go with whichever is more comfortable for you. The maintenance will be there no matter which way you go. I haven't found it to be as extreme as others have mentioned but ymmv.
Just make sure you ride orange:)
