The load planner for the terminals place the order for what side to. It makes a big difference to them. And your right we cant turn them. So they have to be either backed in or backed out depending what side to. Yesterday I sailed one from there that was 1,149' long by 159' wide with 45' draft. Too big for the Panama Canal. Plenty of them these days. That's not the problem the problem is getting under the Bayonne bridge. We often have under 1' clearance. Not fun.
