I've broken lots of bones on my motorcycles over the decades, but the two very most painful was a shattered shoulder in 1981 and a broken ankle on a rocky powerline hill in 2001. I couldn't even ride back down the trail. I straddled the back of my son's YZ and we'd go 50 yards and let me rest and whimper. Meanwhile, other son rode down a ways, walked back up and rode my bike down and repeat. They still giggle at my wailing...
No surgery or pins for that ankle, but I found it a most debilitating injury. I won't go into the shoulder, but while extremely painful, it wasn't as tough. Just months of rehab to get the range of motion back. Ankles are precious. I wear better boots now, or at least boots designed for the job.
