You generally get better power with a water cooled bike, but the simplicity of an air-cooled bike has its advantages. I've had a few motocross bikes that were water cooled, and that was great. Currently, I have an XR650L which is air cooled, and I prefer it that way.

Look around at the water cooled KLR650's and how many have extra junk on there to protect the radiators, or to hold things in place that were damaged in a crash. Air cooled means one less thing to have to worry about.
