Does it really improve shifting that much?

I have a direct on my '77, but I haven't been able to put many miles on the bike since I got it. Although, my left foot feels a bit cramped on the peg and that the shifter doesn't stick out far enough to get my toe under it. But I wonder if changing to the linkage would improve that specific issue.
