In this situation the file is already an mp4 so it's easy to drag and drop into iTunes and then I have the option to watch it on my 42" tv via ATV2 or I can watch it on my iPad2 through Home Sharing. I agree that VLC is a good companion when the file isn't an mp4. Helps to avoid lengthy media file conversions.
