Bummer.

I was afraid that May would be too early...
there are several optional loops I can add into the eastern part of the route.
(New York to Maine (WET! ) and/or Mississippi River Road).

I could also start at Big Bend NP in Texas and work my way up from there.

I lived in Wisconsin for twenty years and have frozen my buttocks off and been hailed on in July... so I know how random weather can be... add in any kind of elevation and it becomes even more so...

I could also, but not preferably, leave later, as I may have to be back for school by August 15th.

I have just started earnest research. Two books that are indispensible and have many on-line resources are:

The Official Guide to America's National Parks by Fodor's
Nat Geo Guide to Scenic Highways and Byways

Local knowledge, of course, trumps all of this... so keep the suggestions coming...
