I took the cheap route on this: I cut a piece of 1/16" steel plate stock to fit on the case where the shifter would impact in the case of a nasty crash. I used epoxy to glue it into place.
At this point if I crashed hard enough to punch through that plate I would have destroyed the entire case. And likely the whole bike.
