Back to the original post, and not wanting to get toooo serious. Surely the point of the VW engine in a BMW (and latterly a soviet) frame was that when it was first done (certainly here in the UK) there were no large, i.e. 1 litre+, alternatives that provided reasonable performance and was cheap and easy to repair and maintain, and, as has been previously quoted, the potential for tuning was far out (twin downdraught, twin-choke webers!) remember until the GoldWing was announced there wasn't a suitable air cooled option.
I am sure that there are more informed minds than mine that can clarify further.
