You can totally get by without one.
None of the rally info pertains to anything on a GPS. with a watch and the small roll chart, you are fully prepared to navigate
I dont have a reliable odo or speedo on my bike, though, so I use one for that, and I waypoint the starts, so that if my rollchart gets fuct up I can still find the next spot
