Darlington is still very much in use by the various NASCAR series. It is probably one of the best tracks for spectator viewing, as the two differently banked and radiused corners make it a true "drivers track." For whatever reason, the fast way around that place is running against the outside wall in the turns, and it makes for some interesting lines and passes.
The cables in the fence are substantial, and spectating at a race involves an element of risk. That is just the way it is.
