The simple answer is that the 1981 R80G/S was an early production (built earlier in 1980 than perhaps normal) of the model year 1981
Ford began building the 2014 Explorers in late January... there are no real rules for model year.
Well, some rules do apply. FMVSS dictates that a production year and model year cannot be more than two calendar years apart. Ford can start building 2014 vehicles in 2013, but they can't make 2015 models yet.
Back to the g/s for a minute... If all g/s's built in 1980 were early intro 1981 model year, when were the 1980 models built? BMW didn't start making the g/s till May 1980.
