It would run with the choke on for a block or two then stop. I would let it sit and kick kick kick and get it going again. Then the same thing.
Is it hard to take a carb apart to clean it if you have never done it before?

It's pretty easy. Have a clean space to work. Lay the parts out carefully. If you have a parts diagram it will be easier. Draw pictures/take photos so you can reassemble it. On screw jets count the turns to closed before disassembly.
